(More) reasons why I will never be mother of the year

Between drop off one and drop off two this morning, I found myself in traffic being cut-off. I mean, REALLY, cut off. The type of cut-off where someone has their foot flat to the floor accelerating stripping you of any opportunity to merge, even though your lane is running out and they are only going to achieve the golden prize of being ONE CAR AHEAD OF YOU.

This frustrated me.

I may have exclaimed an unkind phrase and made some kind of hand gesture to show my displeasure.

Luckily for me, an eagle-eyed Miss Fruitarian was in the car, able to take it all in and no doubt report it all back to a saintly daddy at bedtime.

Afterwards (of course) I felt remorse at yet another incident, which proves what a rubbish mother I am. There are many incidents. The time I slammed the car door shut onto Miss F’s fingers. When I accidently fed her Arrabiata sauce, forgetting in my sleep deprived state that it contains CHILLI. The happy memory of exposing Mr Meat & Potatoes to porn… ahhh the list goes on.

At the end of the day I know that I am just regular mother, doing her best, getting it right most of the time and wrong just often enough to keep a wave of guilt nearby. Over on Facebook the other day, Katrina posted “I like anything that makes parenting easier…it’s the toughest job on earth!”

I couldn’t agree more. It IS tough and we do our best. I remind myself that as the primary caregiver, I have way more chances to make all of the parenting mistakes. I’m sure if my best-friend was in charge of drop-offs, clean uniforms and school notes that he’d show a similar level of ineptitude as me.

But the guilt remains. So to appease it, here’s a quick alphabet tracing sheet to download and help your kiddlies with. It may just help restore some semblance of perfection to your mothering day.

Don't worry, the actual download is perfectly alphabetical.

From pink to P!nk – the sprint to tween-dom

Your days are numbered cute dolly.

Miss Fruitarian announced at dinner the other night that she knows the feeling of touching tongues. And she likes it.

And recently she came home from the schoolyard ripe with the knowledge of what ‘sexy’ meant. So now she knows that all the songs on the radio are about KISSING ON THE MOUTH.

It’s all reported back to me with a smack of attitude and a glimmer in the eye that makes me realise that we are heading full force into the tween years, whether I like it or not.

Considering she didn’t sleep through until 3, it seems like a ripped-off, short amount of time between insanity and the loss of innocence. Sure, boundaries are blurred at the moment – she’s still dressed head to toe in pink, but getting all Katy Perry on my ass. The fairy party hostesses are slowly being phased out (last party was hosted by Hannah Montana’s ‘cousin’) and the whole vernacular is so much more hip now that she’s a big year 1 girl (as is the nonchalant dismissal of her mum, but I guess that’s a whole other post).

So it was with some relief that she requested a bit of girlie craft time. She still enjoys the birdie cutout, but is WAY too old now for the fruit garden colouring. I dug out a fairy mobile activity sheet that I started last year and she’s happy.

Good that I thought to finish it now – another 6 months and it would have been too late.

One last pink, fairy thing to make.

Cutting corners

A friend’s little boy is having a tough time of school. He’s a bit of a perfectionist and is distraught over his second-rate cutting.

Nope, we’re not talking teens and self-harm, we’re talking kindergarten kids who think they’re the worst cutterer-outerers in the class. The teacher assures his mum that he’s doing fine, but there’s nothing more heart-braking than a little tucker trying their hardest and being disappointed. Poor little pet.

So this week we’ve got a Vegie Smugglers activity sheet to help the pre-schoolers get a bit of cutting practice before they hit kindy and the stakes get seriously high.

Another award to stick on the fridge....

And so they can REALLY feel like the big kids, it’s a merit award that they can cut out, write their name on, stick on a star and stick on the fridge.

Nothing but the best cut corners at VS HQ.

Why dads are more fun than mums

Last weekend I took Mr Meat & Potatoes to an AWESOME birthday party and left Miss Fruitarian and her dad, car-less and idle.

I got home several hours later and found the two of them happy as larks, outside, being VERY busy.

Not often would I risk writing ‘dad’, ‘little girl’ and ‘macro lens’ in one sentence (to avoid google placing weird ads at the bottom of my post), but I have no choice here, since that is what took place, for two hours.

Silly? Yes. Fun? Definitely.

Apparently the plan was to create some photos for Miss F to convert into a book of her own. Which is a great idea, and one that I can help out on by doing a quick layout, ready to fill in.

And perhaps you’d all like a go too, so I’ve got a PDF to download. You can scale it up or down, print it out, cut out and rearrange the pages to match a story of your own making. Enjoy.

I'm lost for words on how to caption this ...

or this.

Ahoy me hearties!

toilet paper roll craft pirate and wench

Don't ask why, just accept what is.

Regular readers will know that I need little encouragement to indulge my love of craft with toilet paper rolls. There’s been Gary & Ivana, The Christmas Fairy and Scary Snake, all within a few months. And all it took was ONE comment from Laura requesting MORE and voila, here you have Swashbuckling Steve & Wench Wendy.

Steve is your regular sort of pirate guy, a lover of the high seas, wild adventure and wilder women. Wendy is your typical sort of a wench and offers Steve the regular wenchly things (I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination).

Click to start your high-seas adventure.

As you construct these (with or without your kiddies), don’t forget to soundtrack your life. There’s an eclectic list of pirate song suggestions here. Don’t forget the more traditional song lyrics and I DARE you to not play this and have a bit of a smile and a jig! But for me, the best pirate song is Dreadzone’s dub-meets-sea shantie, Captain Dread.

While you’re at it, don’t forget Talk Like a Pirate Day. You can visit their official website here, which has a handy countdown underway (172 days, 04:08:32 when I looked). And isn’t the internet a fantastic place. Where else could Rob Ossian’s Pirate Cove exist? It covers all things pirate, including a ‘complete list of every pirate movie ever made’.

You look like a monkey (or Rembrandt)…

Next step, the Archibald Prize!

In the footsteps of Dutch painter Rembrandt, we’re heading for the world of High Art (note capital H & A) this week.

Sit the (clothed) kiddies down in front of a mirror and get them to draw what they see, and create their first self-portrait. I’ve made it super easy with my Self-Portrait template, which already has the skull drawn and guides for where the eyes and mouth might go. Kids can add all the fun bits – eyes, hair, mouths and tongues. If you’re having an uber-parent day, you can go crazy with glue and wool for hair (or spiral pasta for curly-haired offspring).

Or leave the kids to it, sneak off for a sit-down, and see what they can come up to all by themselves…

Maybe we should get a baby… or a snake made from toilet rolls?

It would seem that Mr Meat & Potatoes is feeling clucky. Everywhere he looks there are adorable toddlers that make him go ‘aaawwwwwwww’ in a perfect imitation of his 6-year-old sister who saves that sounds for puppies, kittens and anything pink.

In the playground today Mr M&P was eyeing off a cute little Japanese toddler. He said, “Maybe we should get a baby?” I was caught off guard and perhaps didn’t handle things too smoothly.

“No, Angelina,” I gasped, “no more babies – Mummy is too old (and over it) for more babies”.

He looked slightly crushed as the full realisation of a life as the youngest child sank in. No cute little Asian baby sister, no fun little brother in a Superman cape.

I tried to console him. “What about we go home and make a snake?”

He brightened considerably. If you can’t have another sibling, then a snake made out of loo rolls is a pretty good substitute.

Christmas silly but fun (festive ways with loo rolls!)

a christmas fairy made from a toilet roll

Fairy perfection! and in January, just chuck her in the recycling

Nothing demonstrates the joy of starting and the hell of finishing a task more than the annual Christmas tree experience. The excitement! The fun! Decorating the tree each December is one of the best jobs of the year. So full of promise and hope! So different to January 10 last year when you finally had to admit that the damn thing was dead and the lovely smell of pine needles had descended into a vaguely compost-tainted stink.

Then of course the rotting tree sat down the side of the house until the council clean up in March, when brave husband lugged the (excitingly big on it’s arrival) enormous thing out onto the footpath, spiders, cockroaches and all.

This year our tree is done. Covered in school-and-daycare-made treasures. Plus some tinsel and baubles to tizz it up a little. And the pinnacle of tree-joy is, of course, the fairy. A stoic, serene little thing. Stuck in the ornament box all year, then dusted off, fixed with sticky tape and shoved precariously on the top.

This year I’m fully committing to the vaguely-daggy-craft-tree experience, complete with my loo-roll Christmas fairy. She matches in perfectly with all the other handmade stuff. A few paper chains and the tree is complete.

And why is my fairy so happy? Well, she’s a loo roll, with a lovely easy spot to shove the tree, meaning total comfort for her throughout this festive season.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas….

a pattern for a paper snowflake to make with your kids

Nothing says 'Aussie Christmas' as much as a bit of fake snow

Ok, it’s officially December. Being born in late November, I refuse to do anything with tinsel or Bing Crosby until after my celebration of me, but that was last week and I’ve got no more excuses to keep stalling. Time to breathe deeply and tackle the whole enormous festive task.

When do the Christmas negotiations begin at your place? For us, it’s somewhere around June that the first hints start being dropped and the tentative seasonal foreplay begins. Will we lunch here, or travel to there, “Do you think you’ll be heading our way this year?”, “How about you come to us?”, “Last year you did…” You get the idea. Trying to make everyone happy and yet somehow leaving everyone vaguely cranky with you. By mid-October plans are firming and this year we’re biting the bullet and acknowledging that after a couple of years off, we’ll be spending a nice big chunk of Christmas day on the freeway between cities so that we can fulfill all of our family commitments.

At least it gets me out of cooking the turkey. So all that’s left on my list of things to do is… ummmm… everything, actually. Possibly you are in the same boat as me? So to get things started and ease a bit of Christmas cheer into your life, here’s a paper snowflake to make. Just print it (onto coloured paper if you have some), fold on the dotted lines and cut on the solid ones. And voila! Straight to top of the class at The Northpole-Elf-Craft-Academy.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

And as another Christmas sweetener, for the next few days I’m offering a giftwrap service when you buy a copy of the Vegie Smugglers cookbook. Just write ‘giftwrap’ in the special instructions when you order and I’ll deliver it to you in a lovely bright giftwrap, complete with ribbon…
